Every October 20 is celebrated as World Osteoporosis Day, a moment to raise public awareness of the importance of maintaining bone health. Osteoporosis is a condition of decreased bone density and reduced bone mass, which usually occurs in the elderly, especially women after menopause.

According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, one in five elderly people in Indonesia is at risk of osteoporosis. The prevalence among women aged 50 to 80 years is 23%, the prevalence among women aged 80 years and above is 53%, and the prevalence among men aged 50 years and above is 13%. These figures show that osteoporosis is a health problem that needs to be watched out for and prevented as early as possible.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis, also known as bone loss, is a condition in which bone mass and density decrease, making the bone structure thinner, porous, and brittle. As a result, bones become easily cracked or broken even from minor impacts.

Symptoms of Osteoporosis

In general, osteoporosis does not show symptoms in the early stages, but people with osteoporosis usually experience bone injuries and pain, such as:

  • Back and neck pain.
  • Lower back pain.
  • Susceptibility to bone fractures.
  • Hunching posture.
  • Gradual decrease in height.

If the symptoms of osteoporosis are bothersome, don't forget to see an orthopedic specialist.

How to Prevent Osteoporosis

Some steps that can be taken to prevent osteoporosis are as follows:

  1. Follow a balanced diet with foods containing calcium and vitamin D
  2. Meet your daily calcium requirement of 1,000mg/day and vitamin D requirement of 400-800IU/day
  3. Exercise regularly, at least 30 minutes per day
